چکیده

The change in absorbance (hole spectrum) of the primary electron donor (P870) in bacterial photosynthetic reaction centers has been studied at 1.5-2.1 K following narrow-band excitation at several wavelengths within the P870 absorption band. The hole width is very large, suggesting a homogeneous linewidth on the order of 200-300 cm-‘. Possible interpretations of this highly unusual result, including ultra-fast excited-state decay, are discussed.

Physical mechanisms in photosynthesis: past elucidations and current problems.

Photosynthetic tissues are organized functionally into aggregates of light harvesting pigments (mainly chlorophylls, carotenoids, and phycobilins) associated with photochemical reaction centers (1, 2). The pigments absorb light and deliver the energy to the reaction centers, where an oxido-reductive photochemistry ensues. The primary photoproducts, oxidizing and reducing entities, serve as star...

Fluorescence and photochemical quenching in photosynthetic reaction centers.

Photosynthetic bacteria contain bacteriochlorophyll (BChl) that absorbs light and delivers the resulting singlet excitation energy to photochemical reaction centers.' The reaction centers, which have been isolated in a form free of lightharvesting BChl,'-3 contain a photochemically specialized BChl which in Rhodopseudomonas spheroides is called P870 after its absorption maximum near 870 nm. Exc...

Cofactor-specific photochemical function resolved by ultrafast spectroscopy in photosynthetic reaction center crystals.

High-resolution mapping of cofactor-specific photochemistry in photosynthetic reaction centers (RCs) from Rhodobacter sphaeroides was achieved by polarization selective ultrafast spectroscopy in single crystals at cryogenic temperature. By exploiting the fixed orientation of cofactors within crystals, we isolated a single transition within the multicofactor manifold, and elucidated the site-spe...

Hopping Maps for Photosynthetic Reaction Centers().

Photosynthetic reaction centers (PRCs) employ multiple-step tunneling (hopping) to separate electrons and holes that ultimately drive the chemistry required for metabolism. We recently developed hopping maps that can be used to interpret the rates and energetics of electron/hole hopping in three-site (donor-intermediate-acceptor) tunneling reactions, including those in PRCs. Here we analyze sev...

Photochemical processes in photosynthesis studied by advanced electron paramagnetic resonance techniques *

Various continuous-wave and pulse electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and electron nuclear double resonance (ENDOR) experiments performed on the radical species occurring in photosynthetic reaction centers of plants and bacteria during light-induced charge separation are reviewed here. Emphasis is placed on time-resolved experiments performed on short-lived intermediate states such as radical...
